Understanding Vein Disease

Vein disease develops when your veins have trouble moving blood back toward your heart. When the vein valves weaken, blood can collect in the legs and increase pressure inside the veins.

Over time, this pressure may lead to vein disease, many types of which we can treat in our clinic. Our vein specialists in Fort Myers help patients identify the cause of their symptoms and take the next step toward better vein health.

What is Vein Disease?

Each of your veins has one-way valves, which keep blood flowing in the right direction. Many factors can cause these valves to weaken, leading to blood flowing backward (reflux) and pooling in the lower legs.

Weakened valves indicate the initial stages of vein disease, or chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). As time progresses, vein disease can worsen, leading to bulging varicose veins, hard-to-heal venous ulcers, and other complications. CVI is common among older adults, as vein walls become weaker with age and valves are more susceptible to failure.

Not every vein concern is severe, but your symptoms deserve the right attention to help you live life comfortably.

Vein disease can affect your comfort, skin, mobility, and daily routine. Typically, vein disease manifests as spider and varicose veins as a result of faulty blood flow.
